need to replace the garage door opener?

This morning, of course running late for work, I put up the garage door... and once it was fully raised, it kept whirring. Whirring, whirring, whirring... until it stopped, and smelled like a fried motor, and smoke rose from the housing.

Gotta love mornings.

Are we looking at a new garage door opener, or is this something we can fix without replacing the whole shootin' match? Or would the full replacement be worth considering?

In case it matters, I think it's an old door opener... not too many safety features built in. And it has gotten stuck (part-way-up) twice in the last couple of months. ...We've only lived in the house since August, so we only know a very short history.

(By the way, why didn't the motor stop, like usual?)

Thanks--
SB

You could probably replace the motor, but it will probably be less expensive to just buy a new opener. You'll get a brand new unit with safety features, better openers and less grief. Plus, it's a failrly simple installation for the do-it-yourselfer.
