garage, building

i would like to build a garage/workshop, 12x20, gable roof on a concrete slab. Iv'e seen some buildings at some of the home depots for sale (very exspensive) and they all have the same roof design, 2x4 rafters, no ceiling joists. I would like to know if if i could build without ceiling joists (more head room, less cost), I was told by a carpenter that you had to have the ceiling joists to form the triangle to support the roof.any pros and cons to this method?

The reason they are expensive is because of the roof design you want. In reality, what you are seeing at Home Depot is only half the cost. Double that cost for the true cost. No you probably can't do it yourself.
