How do you adjust the tension on garage door springs? What exactly do the springs do for the garage door?

The Springs aid in lifting the door. And keep the door in an open position. I set the tension on my springs to keep the door at a full open position. Before the adjustment the doors were about 18" shy of being fully open. fine for the car, but not for the van. They are easier to adjust with the door open. If you have the cable/spring assembly you just move the tension hook and adjust the eye bolts (if you have them). Make sure you adjust both sides equally. As for the other type I have no idea how to adjust them and recommend they be professionaly done.
