repairing a hose
#1

I need to repair the female end on 2 of my hoses. I have purchased a Clinch mender. Does anyone know how to use this device to repair a hose?

bean9600,
I'm not sure what a clinch mender is, but all you needed to purchase was either plastic or brass female ends and replace your damaged ones. You simply cut off the bad end with a utility knife, replace end, and tighten screws or clamp.

Hi bean9600
Below is a link that will show you the different parts for garden hose repair.
We repair so many hoses each season, I like the Heavy Duty, brass barb end with hose clamp best. A safety note: After you tighten the hose clamp, push the tail in to keep it in then wind about 8 wraps of electrical tape around the hose clamp area. This will prevent cuts when working with the hoses..
We just had too much leaking using the Clinch mender hose repair ends. You insert it into the hose and crimp the petals around the hose to hold it on.

bad news bean. I have never had a hose mender that didnt leak after a week or two. even stripped out the screws tightening them ...still leak. my .02. buy a new Flexogen hose. I use these in a commercial setting and you cant beat their strength (600psi burst) and they are very flexible. I prefer 5/8 for a little higher flow. Longer hoses can get heavy is about the only downside. I think its about $30 for a 60 foot hose.
Hope this helps-Josh

Hi bean9600 & josh1
If you have a Lowe's store near you or maybe it's lowes.com I don't know. They have the finest hose on earth the Flexogen hose 5/8" by 60 foot long for $14.99 with a free water timer. We paid $30.00 ea for 10 of them 3 years ago. Best hose in the World, just wish Lowes had them when we bought ours
On a sad note is if you, like me have a 25 year old Son who mows before he looks sometimes. The Heavy Duty Brass barb with HD Hose clamp, is a God Send & has never leaked on us yet.
In fact we have been putting Fruit trees in for the last 3 years & use the HD brass Ts with male end to make a custom water system for each tree.
We buy an inexpensieve 1/2" by 100 foot hose, cut in a brass T and use the plastic Y that comes with the black 36" soaker rings to hook the ring up around each tree. I use the factory male end for the last tree & work my way back to the female end, & cut the factory female part of the hose off to custom fit it to the faucet with a female HD brass barb with hose clamp. You then can bury the main hose so the sun and mowing will not hurt it. Remember to blow the whole works out, with compressed air in the Fall to remove all the water.
We add a new line each year for every year we plant a new row of trees. In that application and full 50 PSI use we have had no leaks yet in 3 years. The feed lines to the soaker rings are run at 15 PSI so all 4 lines let the soaker rings drip instead of emit to much water at full pressure.
Every plastic, hose end or splice we have tried either break or leak like crazy. I really dont like anything to do with plastic ends on hoses the always break or leak.
( bean9600) I know you asked a simple question about how to install a certian type of hose repair end. Let me say if I had to use that end or splice, I would get some Permatex #2 non hardening Gasket Goop, at an Auto parts store. This will keep it from leaking. I have used it for heater hoses & raidator hoses without leaks and a need to over tighten the hose clamps for 30 years in shop & at home. Wear throw away rubber gloves, it's messy to work with and hard to get off your hands.
We found the HD brass fitting worked well, without a pipe dope & you can remove it if ever needed, unlike the Clinch mender type.
I have never seen the Clinch Mender tool, so I can only say look at it, and crimp the fingers as evenly as possable, not to much pressure on that crimp.
Good luck

marturo we should buy flexogen stock. I have 3 in use in a commercial garden shop setting for 2 years no problems. The really nice thing about them is the machined O ring seals on the female end. Cant lose the washer like on most hoses. I think ive been paying way too much for them though! 15 bucks and a free timer... hmm maybe lowes isnt so bad. Flexogen also makes 3/4 hoses but I havent used them yet. SOmeday ill go for the 100' 3/4. Im sure it weighs in on the heavy end though. They are top notch!
lee valley tools sells them but sounds like way more $ than lowes.

Josh I looked at these hoses trying to find out why they were selling them for 1/2 the price of other places.
They are perfect and the man just said we buy them by the truck load so we can offer then for less. My friends who own Nurseries say even Wholesale they can't come close to Lowe's.
I think at this price it would not hurt to set a few back for our Grandkids LOL. I'm glad you mentioned the Flexogen hoses so the others who are looking for a do it all 20 year easy, hose would have the name of this fine Garden hose.
I will check later to see if Lowes has a web site and if they sell them online. All I saw was the 5/8" by 60 foot but with Lowe's you never know.
