What pretty flowers grow good in shade?
I wondered what flowers were colorful and could grow good in shady areas? I have an area on the north side of my house that could use a little color. It is next to a porch, so it is constantly in the shade and moist. Most of the foliage that I have been coming across has been vines, which I am not interested in. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi andy7795, Welcome to DIYs Garden Forum
There are many very good plants that will do well in cool damp places. You can mix & match colors using Impations, either the single our rose like doubles. Coleus is a plant with colorful folage that will make a nice background, for other plants.
Remember for best bloom & color use a plant food with a low Nitrogen count, like 5-10-15 is a great one, for Flowers & will not fail to give a long color season display.
Please feel free to look at our stickys at the begining, where you can find lots of links, for useful garden help. Check out an online catalog like Parks our Burppes & see all the choices you have for the shady gardens. Today we have more shady garden plants due to light conditions in peoples yards.
Good luck on you choices for a shady garden, their are many choices, so enjoy yourself.
Marturo.

Chris,
I looked up Impatiens because I'm impatient LOL. They are beautiful flowers and come in several variations.
I found these 3 that I really like and this site to read up on them:

Mosaic Series
Rosette Mix
Summer Romance Mix
Aren't those beautiful!

They sure are Kay! A little trick to save a lot of money. No seeds are avaible at a good price for the Rose forms.
Buy 3 4" inch pots for $4.00ea & a small bottle of Dip N Gro then get at least 12 Jiffy7s.
Follow the directions for the dip N Gro. Make your cuttings, put in to Jiffys & use a clear toped flat or some, I get the tall clear Cake plastic protectors, for 50 cents ea in the bakery of delli.
Keep the top closed for at least 4 days a heating pad or cable for plants underneth helps them root. Inside a moist warm enviorn to keep the rootless hydrated through it's leaves.
Now you can have beds instead of pots of these great looking Rose Impations for under $15.00 instead of over $100.00.
I have rooted leaves with Dip N Grow, even threw out what was left of the Rootone powder. I have never used a better rooting promoter ever.

I have a sunny front yard, and shady backyard. I want the backyard to be my 'haven'. I plan to install a water garden in the sunny corner of the yard and lots of pretty things under the trees in the other corner and half of the yard. This is exciting for me. I've been one to just clear out any gardens that were present where I lived and had nothing but yard. Now...I want a beautiful yard that I can sit and relax in.
Please bear with me and my silly questions. I'm not even sure what zone I'm in, but will look it up. I'm also going to spend a lot of time here reading posts and learning as much as I can.
This house is the HOME that I hope my husband and I will grow old together in so it means a lot to me to begin now (youngest is 10).
Thanks for the tips, Marturo! I will take a copy of your post with me so they will understand what I'm asking for and not try to convince me of other things. LOL.
