Earthworms coming Indoors

has anyone ever heard of earthworms making an effort to crawl under a loose bit of weather stripping around a window 8" off the ground (concrete foundation up to the window edge) to come into a house?

Smile EarthWorms travel overground.

Hi, keziah Welcome to the DIY Garden Forum

I have to ask. You haven't been feeding the EarthWorms have you? I have read where they lose all fear of Humans when you feed them Just Kidding I feed them all the time.

I have found Earth Worms in some very strange places. I don't think they can see real well & like a snake, they can climb & move along over ground. They stay below because to a bird the EarthWorm is a crawling sausage LOL.

If it's been wet or foggy EarthWorms will stay above ground longer. However I can think of no real reason, that an EarthWorm would want in your house. They can't live in their very long, unless you have a dirt floor.

Sorry, but who know's why an EarthWorm does anything but eat and poop

Earthworms

Make sure you seal all nooks and crannies around your home where insect and rodent pests, as well as earth worms and slugs can enter. Like marturo states, your home is not an ideal situation for an earth worm. Perhaps an occasional lost earth worm finds its way through the opening into your home. Earth worms tend to move more rowdily when there is excess moisture in the soil, such as after heavy rains when they try to reach the surface. We tend to see them on driveways and sidewalks and in peculiar places. Mother Nature gave us earth worms to till the soil.

If you are a fisherman, you now know that you have earthworms which can be caught or dug for your fishing bait. If you don't have your license, then maybe you might want to consider getting them and finding a new hobby. There's no feeling in the world better than that tug on the line.

oh, i love to fish, too bad I don't like 4 eyed fish! (hehehe...if the river smells that bad it has to produce 4 eyed fish, right?)

It has been raining a lot, and I wouldn't be so concerned if it was only 1 or maybe even 2 earthworms, but in the past 4 days, 3 that's we've caught and 4 other bodies have come in!

weird man, weird.
so, since I have about 10,000 birds, a bunny rabbit, and a mouse living in my yard, maybe i'm becoming like some weird dr. doolittle or something, the animals (and insects) are drawn to me!

Earthworms

Yea, I have given up fishing the last decade or so because of stream pollution and fear of eating the fish I caught. You don't have to keep the one's you catch, you know. You can toss them back. And, you don't have to eat the bottom feeders. I have gotten over that, and will get my license again this spring because I am heading to my mountain cabin and don my waders again. I need to fish. It is solace for my soul. I will toss them back if they don't meet the state limitation requirements for size or if they look diseased. I want to taste a fish that I caught myself. I want to go forth with my waders, bait, and pole, and be the fisherwoman I once was.

If you have had heavy rain, the worms are being driven to the top. Find the entry and seal. I don't know where you have found them in your home, but the worms could have come in under a door where the door does not properly meet the threshold or you do not have an adequate weatherstrip. Keeping door thresholds sprayed with insecticide tends to help. I keep mine sprayed with Raid to eliminate spiders and anything that wants to enter my home at bay. Also, spread Sevin dust around the perimeter of your foundation to keep insects at bay. Of course, in doubt, you can always call a pro for a monthly insecticide treatment. The key here is to close off the entries.

I miss fishing as well, I grew up in rural north carolina and there is nothing better than a fresh, pan fried rainbow trout, hushpuppies and coleslaw!
YUM! YUM!

Baked Beans

Let's add some baked beans to the menu, please. If my mother was really excited about the adventure, we also had homemade potato salad. Let's plan a fishing trip soon!

I'll paddle off aways, so I won't spook the fish, afore I start my motor. Good luck

Speaking of bait LOL...I had that problem, too. Not the fishing deals, but the worms coming in the house. We have some beautiful earth worms that could pose for the guiness book of world records!

They were coming in the side door of the house when it rained. I had to seal the door (very small gap at the side toward the bottom). It amazed me how they would go up a small brick step to get to the door.

I watched a worm the other day (this bugger was thick and long) and noticed that when it was working through the garden it got super thin and SUPER long. Guess that's how they kept coming in the little space on the door.

Once I sealed that small gap, no more worms in the house.

Kay

Ps. Am off to post about azaelas.

K.

I haven't fished since I was a kid. Just doesn't seem the same without my dad around. I took the younger ones one time. Okay, that didn't happen again. My kids are spastic and hurt each other. The rod and hooks become weapons LOL.
