Soil Solution

Recently I tore up some grass to enlarge a flower bed. The soil under the removed grass is very hard. What is the best ingredients to add to the soil for best flower growth?

griffey,

I sympathize with you.
If a small tiller is not too large for the area in question, tilling will certainly help. And adding any kind of peat/humus or organic matter will enable most flower/plant growth. With rocky or extremely clay soil, I have at times, removed all the bad soil and replaced entirely with workable soil.
