we have a large bed at our property entrance that we have covered with pine straw, then mulch, then pine straw, etc...

am considering something like brick nuggets or marble chips for a more permanent, less maintenance solution.... any preferences out there? would either one hold up better over time (sun, rain, etc.?) cheers

Even the more durable things such as rocks will require maintenance in that someone will have to pick up the trash, tend to some weeds, and straighten the rocks periodically. A dense groundcover such as english ivy or some juniper would give you a living cover that would not require replenishment.

I think that it all goes back to preferences. I like open beds covered with wood mulch or leaves. I think the rock beds look too formal. But my house is more of an informal country place. www.chris.fite/houses.html

Hope this helps.
