trimming tree branches

Hi we just bought a home that has a very tall, old tree in the backyard (I think it's a maple). We want to keep the tree but trim some of the lower branches which hang so low they almost touch the ground. Do I simply saw off the branches and leave it at that or is there something I should put on the cut ends? Do I cut them right down to the tree trunk or do I leave a couple inches of the branch sticking out? Any advice is appreciated. I don't want this tree to die.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I am glad that you asked about how to prune a tree. So many just do it and worry with the consequences later on.

Here is a comprehensive link on how, when, and why not to prune a tree.

Hope this helps.
