Hummingbird feeder nectar

didn't know where to put this...

all season I've been trying to attracted hummingbirds to my feeders, but rarely does one of the jeweled birds ever come. It will show up once every two weeks or so, and even then just stays long enough to check out the feeder - without feeding from it. I have the standard feeder - red "platform" with yellow flower to feed from... the nectar mixture is the part water-part sugar deal, uncolored. I was wondering if I might be able to dye the water red with food coloring (though I have heard the dye isn't good for the birds...)? Everyone else I know that attracts hummers dyes the water... but since I've heard it may not be good for the birds, yet am not entirely sure, could someone please clarify for me? thank you!

Here's a pretty good page on hummers. It has some tips on attracting them and shuns the use of red dyes.

Hope this helps.
