Apple Tree - Maybe....?

Apple Tree - Maybe....?
We moved into our house a year or so ago. We have a biggish fruit tree in the back yard that has turned out to be some sort of apple tree. For the first time since we moved in, I notice it has apples growing on it. But the apples are small (2" dia.), green, mis-shapen, pock-marked. Some have started to show some red coloring to them.
My question: Is this just some sort of crab-apple tree? Or does this sound like a real apple tree that just needs some help? And if it is, what do I do to promote getting real apples next year? It hasn't been pruned in years, so I plan to get a professional pruner who knows fruit trees to come and prune it next February/March. Beyond that, I'm lost.
Thanks!

call in an expert
None of us can see the tree nor its fruit, so we'd all be guessing. Your best bet is to call in an arborist. Second option would be to take some of the fruit to a local nursery (not a department of a discount place) or apple orchard for an opinion.
