rhododendron help

Help, I have 3 very large, very leggy rhododendron bushes that would like to neaten up and transplant. Is there an order to that move-prune, prune-move, prune-1yr-move, etc.?

The key to survival is the root system. If you can get all of the root ball, you can move it anytime. It will need to be kept watered.

If you cannot get the whole root ball, trench around it a foot deep and a foot radius, and fill the trench with compost or peat moss mixed with soil and move it next year.

If you don't move it now, prune it when it is as dormant as it will get, probably late December. Depends upon your climate. My take is that it is much colder, much sooner in NH than here in SC.

Hope this helps.
