Unhappy Trees

30years ago two tulip Poplars were planted in our front yard. The trees are now huge and we have a root problem. There are approx. 15 roots that are about 12" on top of the ground, making it very difficult to mow. We contacted a landscaper and was told if we have the roots removed the trees may become unstable and could fall on the house. Is this logical? Any thoughts or solutions?

Such is the nature of trees. The roots hold the trees up. Either cut them down or make a bed of mulch over the rooted area and plant pansies or other such decoration.
