plants for the shade

The front of my house faces the north east so it gets very little sun. What sun it does get is filtered through some trees. We'd like to plant some evergreens and colorful plants out there, but we have no idea what kind will thrive in this type of shade. All the plants we looked at said sun to partial shade.

What plants grow well in the shade? We're thinking of rhodedendrans, azaleas, day lillies, hydrengeas. Would any of these work? We live in Zone 6 (Southeastern PA).

Also, how do you know if your soil is acidic?

Here is a good site for shade plants.

Have a soil test performed to learn what needs to be added to the soil. This will tell you what is needed to correct pH and any other deficiency.

Hope this helps.
