Suggestions for Landscaping playground area

Our yard has a large tree (not sure what kind)- The kids swingset is not to far but not much grows under the tree and the whole area gets very muddy when it rains. I'd like to put something down so the kids can still play when the ground is still a little wet- Any suggestions on what I can put under the swingset so it is not a mudpit!??
Thanks

Hardwood mulch. Rubber mulch. Pine bark mulch. Pea gravel mulch.

Here in GA I have access to Red Oak mulch. I have it ground so as not to be too chunky. Forms a nice mat and is very attractive. It doesn't cling to clothes and shoes too badly either. I have also used an indigenous gravel as well (similar to pea gravel and only $20 a yard) - a by-product of a local sand mining company. In spite of it being rock, the small size makes a good cushion for falls. Also- it isn't tracked into the house.

why not plant a shade tollerant turf like fescue? if the shade is too dense you could thin the tree to allow filtered sun.
