staking squash plants

I have a small container garden that includes some summer squash plants (zucchini, patty-pan squash). Can these plants be trained to grow upwards using a stake, instead of horizontally?

Zucchini - no, squash - yes. Go to your local library and check out the book "Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew. There are entire sections on container vegetable gardens and also "vertical" growing. This book should not only answer your questions about how to do it but give you some more ideas as well. Have fun.
