I have some bush roots exposed for 6-8 weeks now and I would like to have them 'removed' without the expense of having a tree-man come and without renting a machine. Is there some kind of 'harmless' chemical I can pour over the roots and have them rot more quickly? I am in no hurry, but clearly don't want to wait too long.

There is a product for tree stumps. I've heard mixed results with it. Bush roots are another matter. Check with your local garden center and read the labels for recommended use. Usually there is nothing you can do except grub the roots out to your desired planting depth if you wish to replant in the same site. Otherwise just grub out to about 6-12" and go after any attempt to regrow (there really shouldn't be any but some plants can be pretty insistant).
