Kill/remove wild grass/weeds from slope

Hello all,

I have a small uphill slope on the back of my property that I would like to clear and plant wildflowers (I'm in Southern California). It is covered in wild grass and weeds that have grown over the winter. Should I just cut it and break up the surface of the dirt? Or is there some other method to killing them off.

thanks in advance,

It would be simpler to mow, then apply RoundUp when the new growth appears. This will kill most everything. Then proceed to prepare the soil and plant.
