we would like to plant azaleas across the front of our house which is sunny in the afternoons, and heather near the driveway which is sunny all day. We live in the south and don't get too many days of freezing weather. Is this the time to plant these bushes or is it better to do it in early spring (which comes in February around here!). Thanks.

Check with a local nursery, not a garden department. Azaleas like partial shade. I live in the midwest and they would not survive in my front yard which gets the afternoon sun.

As for planting - the standard answer here is "as long as the ground isn't frozen".

BobF is absolutely right. Get local information from a "locally" owned nursery not "big box or garden center".

An excellent source of local information is your local Cooperative Extension Service. You can contact them at http://www.reeusda.gov/1700/statepartners/usa.htm. Click on your state, then your county, then find your local office.

Contact them and they will be able to give you all the information you need regarding planting, care, culture, and protection. These are good people to get to know.

As for the sun - azaleas are woodland plants. Think of dappled sun/shade in a woodland glen. They need some sun, of course, but the direct rays of the summer sun are usually harmfull. The buds for the next spring form during the summer and fall. Any baking by the sun will result in a shortage of bloom. That is, after all, why we love them.

The plant itself will have a struggle surviving. In addition, the plants will have to deal with reflected light and heat from the structure of your house.

As for when, color and variety selection is generally better in the spring when the nurseries are full of plants and everyone has the urge to plant.
