bolting
Folks;
What does the term "bolt" mean? I read in a garden book about lettuce bolting but it didn't explain what it was. Also what is the best way to plant
green onions? I live in Delaware and never seem to have any luck growing them. Thank you in advance for your help.

Bolting is the seed stalk.
Bolting is what we call it when a vegetable like lettuce or Spinach sends up a seed stalk making the plant taste bitter.
I start all my onions in a 168 cell winstrip tray & keep them cut back to 2" until I plant them out. Spring onions should be set out sooner than the regular onions.

Bolting is actually defined as any plant prematurely going to seed. Yes, lettuce bolting is a good example when the head splits open, but it happens with all plant, and the reaction is different. Broccoli for instance, has its florets actually open to display the yellow flowers. Cauliflower will raise some if it shoots higher than the rest of the curd
