White film on ever greens at base

I have two older evergreens and some red mulch(chopped red wood maybe) that have a white film on it.If I turn the red mulch overthe white film on the bottom of the mulch. About 1 in down.On the ever greens its on the base .

Are these trees? How deep is the mulch and how long has it been in place? What zone are you?

White film on ever greens at base

These large bushes are In NYC. The white film started last year sometime .the mulc is only about1-2 inches deep.

Mystery Solved

This is the mycelium of a mycorrhyzal fungus. It is good for the tree as it helps the tree absorb nutrients from the soil. Usually appears when you have good growing conditions.
