Lawn Grubs

Lawn Grubs
Hi,
I was wondering if those grubs found in my lawn can hurt the plants in my raised bed veggie garden.
Thanks Mike

Japanese beetle grubs are predators in gardens, especially in lawns. The grubs are in the shape of a white C. There are pesticides for the treatment of grubs. Milky spore is a biological option and works best in soil pH of 6.5 to 7 and a warmer climate. Milky spore takes about three years for spores to give good control. Once established, the spores can offer 15-20 years of control. It is not affected by other lawn chemicals. Don't mow grass after dusting lawn until after it has rained or watered in.

From a practical perspective, a few grubs won't be a problem. There are always some of these floating around. You can decide to treat them prophylactically or see if there is a problem before treating. I dig these up from time to time in the yard and garden, but I don't have any problems from them. As twelvepole said, it takes a while to gain control.
Here is an article at Cornell University's website on how to measure the density of grubs in your soil and some guidelines to deciding if there is a problematic number of them and treatment options.

Hope this helps.

Grubs
I have seen the half circle shaped white ones when I hoe the sides of the beds. I did'nt know they were jap beetles.... I see them on some of my garden flowers sometimes mobbing the plant. Does anyone know if 1/4 oz. of kerosene and a gal of h2o will deter the fly's that lay eggs in turnip plants? I read it in a old mother earth organic garden book.
I must say if anyone is a trout fisherman those grubs are super bait, mole crickets too.
Thanks Mike

My yard is starting to have areas that have holes that look like a pencil has been shoved into the ground killing the grass. I don't know what it is, but I want to kill it! I live in Maryland. What is it and when do I do what!
PS. Those white grubs you guys are talking about are NOT JAP Beatles, they are grubs that eat the grass roots.

My problem is what is causing the pencil size holes in my yard (hundreds) which follows by the grass dying, is it mole crickets? I already know I have a tremendous invasion of the "White Grubs"! Japanese beetles, you bet I have them.
However to get enough of the Milky Spore stuff to do an acre would cost you a fortune! Where is the government on this!!!!! It could be subsidized easily by the government. The cost damage is so high it is ridiculous in direct and indirect damage to plants and the ecology.
Question: What Brand killer can I get to destroy all of these lawn pests, grubs, mole crickets, Etc,.
This is April 29 2005. I would really appreciate an answer ASAP on a product and an application date for the Fredrick Maryland area.
I don't need someone slapping a tambourine and telling me about the ecology, I have no doubt I contribute to it more than many of you, but enough is "ENOUGH"!!!!!

I still have not figured out what makes the pencil-sized holes in the lawn.
Deltamethrin or Bifinthrin should do a good job of killing all these pests you mention.

Morania, I apologize for being so "blunt", but you don't live in Fredrick Maryland. Yes, you are correct moles do eat the grubs and a lot of other insects and worms. But, a mole would have to be made of some special steel to dig in this ground, shale layers with clay in between! I haven't seen a mole since I left Virginia. They are not near the problem I am having.
CHfite, thanks, of the two which is most ecology friendly and when do you apply, time of year?
