Somebodys eatin my trees! How do I stop them?

I purchased some farmland in S. New Mexico and will be building a house shortly, a couple months ago we planted about 14 trees and I noticed today that something has been eating at the trunks. These trees are all about 6-7 ft tall. 2 of the trees have started to look bad, discoloration and spots have appeared on the leaves.

On the property I have seen gofers, jack rabbits, lizards, and birds. Whos to blame and how can I stop them? Is there something I should wrap around the trunks until the trees get bigger? Since I am not living out there yet its hard to keep an eye on things.

Thanks in advance,

John

I have seen the corragated drain pipe (flexible stuff) split and placed around tree trunks. Duct tape on the cut. It just sits there. Lets air in and water but deters animals. Good luck.
