Unhappy Need advice for wilted mums

I spent $100 on mums this fall and they have already turned brown & wilted. I live in Central TX, the weather here is 85 one day, 32 the next! How can I save these plants so they come back next year? Amy in Austin

Overwintering mums fair better in well-drained soil. Those planted in heavy, poorly drained soils have a tougher time surviving winter. When ground freezes, mulch plants to keep them evenly cold and help prevent heaving from freeze and thaw. Remove mulch in spring when they begin to grow. You do not need to cut back plants or prune until spring. Should you decide to do so, leave at least 6-8" of growth.
