Red Button Ginger Help

My wife and I had new landscaping put in last year. One of the plants installed was a Red Button Ginger with really neat looking red bulbs that blossom with redish/orange/yellow leaves. Some of the bulbs, after time, turn brown and unhealthy looking. Do we trim off these bulbs? How do you maintain Red Button Ginger plants? Any help would be appreciated!!!

An average amount of water and fertilization, a bit more in warm weather, a bit less in winter, is all this plant should need. The cones fade and should be trimmed. It should be hardy in zone 9, maybe zone 8.
