mock orange

We have a mock orange that is beautiful when bloomed but its growthg is out of control. It is over twenty years old and I have cut it down , with it growing back. Are there any other suggestions to keep it pruned, trimmed and cleaned or is it best to dig it out and start over?

prune to desired shape and size when dormant. prune for sun exposure. ( round or rounded shape) fertilize after blooming.

Or take a tip from the bonsai folks and trim the roots back as well to reduce its feeding range. Trying to keep a plant smaller than its normal size can be a chore.
