Mulch concerns

Can pine straw be used on all types of garden plants or is it
too acid for the flowers? The shredded hardwood mulch seems
to pack together and become hard.
Thanks,
Donna

Hi Brightly,

You can use pine straw for your plants unless you are growing something that likes an alkaline soil. Pine straw will lower the pH over time and make the soil more acid, but most plants prefer a soil towards the acid side. You might want to consider a pH test before you use it and then do another a year later. If you notice your plants yellowing you probably will need to change your mulch. Here's a couple of sites that lists the pH preference of many plants.
