Too late to move lettuce?

I planted lettuce too close together, now they're really crowded.

Can I transplant them to allow more room to grow?

Thanks.

You don't say how large they are, but if there is no other option give it a try. Work early in the day. A cloudy day is best. Have the new area well prepared and do one plant at a time so they are out of the ground for the shortest time possible.

How large are the plants? Why not just harvest it and enjoy a salad? I have successfully moved lettuce up to a few inches tall, but of course it's easier to thin it while still in the cotyledon stage.

I would say they're about half way to harvest.

I use them to feed our rabbits, so I don't harvest as you normally would, rather I pick here and there until the season is over.

If growing leaf lettuce, harvest outer leaves to allow the inner ones to grow. Leaf lettuce is best transplanted when around 3-4". As indicated, transplant on cloudy day and provide some shade with cheese cloth until established.
