Question Dying Persimmon Tree

I have a Persimmon tree with a gaping hole at the base of the trunk fungus is growing from it and the tree seems to be showing signs of dying (skimpy leaf cover). Is there anything I can do to mend the hole and nurse the tree back to health?

It sounds like your persimmon may have developed a canker like hispidus. The disease is usually quite extensive inside the tree. Often a wound in a tree's bark leaves it open for a fungus to develop. An arborist should be able to accurately identify the disease and whether your tree can be saved.
