pear tree drying up

I have two pear trees, of different varieties , about twenty years old in my back yard. Since the past two years some branches on only one of them die. I cut off the dead branches; but more die eventually - the leaves get brown and die. What is the cause? How can I remedy it?

Well, it could just be old age. Some varieties of pear trees only last 15-20 years. Some will last 45 or even 60 years, but will not bear fruit that long.

Do you know the varieties?

Are these fruit-bearing or ornamantal?

I do not know the variety. About a quarter of the pear has a pinkish colour. It bears many each year, and has many this year.

Hi Ghelp,

Do you see any black growths on the branches where the limbs die off? I'm thinking of some type of canker.

fire blight

I did some researsch and I think that the problem is fire blight. The symptoms of fire blight is the same as my tree has. Management is a mix of pruning, spraying with bordo and application of a weak bleach.
