Earthworms will loosen soil, but they don't like many types of soil other than loam. If you have clay, you'll probably need to rototil to loosen it.

Hi Ronald,

You don't say if this is for a veggie garden, flower garden or lawn. You also don't say if anything is planted there now or if you are preparing a bed. The best thing you can use to loosen hard soil is organic matter. One of the best ways to do that is with compost. A 3" to 4" layer tilled into the soil is a great start. If this is for a bed you are preparing for planting in the spring, you can make sheet compost/aka lasagna compost now and it will be ready in spring for planting.

I have been told by golf course builders , that they add sand to the soil to make it assorb water, not sure if that will be of any help Rex

Adding sand to hard soil will only make it harder - like the aggregate in concrete.

Add the organic matter. Add more organic matter every year.

I had real hard soil, added bags of compost and topsoil every year and now I can plant almost anything and it will grow. Make sure you mulch over the bed, keeps the soil moist and reduces weeds.

Good luck, be patient.
