Sweet smelling fern?

hello
every once in awhile when i pass a forest or some shrubbery i will get a hint of a sweet smell. Someone once told me it was a fern. is this possible? it is an incredibly beautiful sweet smell that always seems to come from wild areas. Does anybody possibly know what this smell is coming from? thank you.

There is a plant known as sweet fern: http://www.scienceviews.com/plants/sweetfern.html

In Illinois the plant is on the endangered species list.
