I have compiled a partial list of shrubs that I think are shade tolerant in NC that I can choose from to plant between my lawn and my neighbors house for privacy (the way the house's are built I sit on my front porch and look straight at their driveway and front door). The plants I listed are: Pieris japonica 'Mountain Fire', Pieris ‘Forest Flame’, Viburnum, Mountain Laurel, Rhododendron, Skimmia Japonica, Aucuba japonica, Leucothoe and Hinoki "False" Cypress (I really like this one alot). I want something fast growing, or if not fast at least big enough to provide some privacy blocking (5-8' would be nice). Would a couple of Hinoki/Boulevard False Cypress's fit in that little strip for the long term? I know it would do the sight-blocking job pretty well. This small strip area gets morning sun for about 2-3 hours. I'm getting older and I don't want to have to wait 10-15 years to see these plants mature to around 5'-8' height to a nice natural privacy blocker from my neighbor, so I guess I'll have to buy bigger. This long strip (50' x 12') between my yard and my neighbors has some scattered trees and a lot of open space, but has been mulched with cedar chips. Could you give your thoughts and ideas, please. I have two Arbovitae, each about 8 ft. tall and probably 10 years old, which are sitting in the wrong place. I would like to transplant them now in February in Maryland, but hesitate, if the chances of survival are slim. Does anybody have any experience or recommendations with this problem?
