Missing Bark
Hello,
We've been getting a ton of snow and noticed a couple weeks back that the bark of pretty much all our small trees is gone. It's missing about 1.5' up. Are rabbits eating this bark? Will the trees survive once the weather gets warmer?

Most animals will consume tree bark, especiallly if there is snow on the ground. Protection of the bark is recommended. Opening up of the bark leaves the trees vulnerable to insects and disease. If animals completely girdle the bark, the trees lose the ability to transport moisture and nutrition and will die.
Plastic tree guards can be placed around tree and buried an inch or more in soil in late fall. Mice, voles, deer and other animals will eat bark. Snow or wire fencing is available to protect larger trees and shrubs from deer.

If bark has not been completely girdled, go ahead with tree guards. If openings in bark are jagged, trim neatly with utility knife to remove any loose bark and neaten the open areas. Cross your fingers that bark will heal and you get no disease or insects. Survival will depend upon extent of damage.
