planting trees??

I live in the country and was wondering if I could dig up trees from my area and transplant them in my yard? I have bought trees from the nursery and paid big bucks and brought them home and planted, water and they have died. There is an abundant supply in my pasture and along the roads. Anybody know if this would work and if so is there anything special I need to do to get them to survive. In case you need to know I am in Oklahoma. Thanks Judy

Of course those trees will thrive in your area.

I initially root-prune them a week or so before the actual transplant. Drive a shovel 'round your planned (manageable) root ball, and give the tree some time to recover.
