upside down tomatoes

Someone mentioned to me that u could grow tomato plants by hanging upside down in container on ur porch. Just wandering if anyone has experience doing this and how its done. Sounds kinda funny way of growing tomatoes. Haven't had much success growing in the garden and I thought I would give it a try. Don't get how it is possible?

Plant in bottom of 5 gallon bucket into which you cut a hole. Cut a hole in lid for watering. Hang and let tomato grow out of bottom of bucket. Details: http://www.minifarmhomestead.com/gardening/tomato.htm

i did some last year and was not impressed. large plants with small tomatoes compared to the in ground plants.
used faffard container mix and a drip system. perhaps not enough fertilizer. this year i'm trying cucumber and squash in the buckets.
