Cool Korean Dogwood Tree

We are thinking about planting a Korean dogwood tree in our yard... can anyone suggest any tips or hints on selecting this tree in a nursery near us?

Thanks.

P.S. this is going to be planted in Long Island, NY

This first site has some basic info about Korean dogwood aka Cornus kousa. It also has an extensive cultivar list that shoud come in handy.

You don't say if you will be planting the tree or the nursery will, but here's how to plant, mulch and water your tree.

Check to see your new tree isn't planted too deeply either in the pot or if it's b&b (balled and burlaped).

I look for general shape of the tree. It should be generally upright, with a clear leader developing. Look for evidence of new leaves and vigorous growth. The trunk of the tree should be undamaged. Planted in full sun, dogwoods tend to develop limbs and leaf coverage down to the ground to shade themselves. If you plan to limb it up, wait until the upper branches have developed shading for the entire plant.

The kousa dogwood is attractive, because it develops its flowers after the leaves emerge. This gives a pleasant contrast of flowers over leaves. It blooms about a month later than the cornus florida here in zone 7.

Hope this helps.
