What caused this black spot on the watermelon
Located in Mobile, Alabama. First time growing watermelons. This black spot appeared on the watermelon. Then it grew. For reference, pocket knife is 3.5 inches. It looks like insects of some kind, but I don't know what. We've sprayed with Bt on the watermelons. What would cause this?

Hi Mobile Man,
It looks like blossom end rot. Scroll down here at the bottom of the page. It's under 'Diseases' and then 'Malformations'. There's also a picture.

Blossom End Rot occurs more readily in oblong melons. Caused by a deficiency in calcium either in the soil or by a lack of water availability for Ca uptake and movement. Prevent by liming and providing adequate supply of water.
