Sparks flying when i cut log on ground

I was cutting up a log on the ground. Sparks started to fly. Would this be from the fast moving teeth hitting the saw dust on the ground or would it be something else?

What kind of wood is it? I've seen sparks when cutting locust.
It's never a good idea to let the chain come in contact with the ground - can you roll the log [or raise it] for the final cuts? Are you hitting rocks when cutting too close to the ground?

Sparks

As Mark said, you may be hitting rocks; not good for the saw chain. A foreign object such as a nail could be embedded in the log; not good for the saw chain. Raise the log off the ground, continue to saw, and see if that solves the problem. Never let the saw chain touch the ground while sawing.
