Marking Trees?

This may sound like an odd question, but here goes:

We live on a former christmas farm. For the past two holiday seasons, someone comes on the property and cuts and steals three or four nice trees.

Is there something we can mark the trees with that will make them less attractive during the holiday season but that will wear off by spring? We thought about landscaping spray paint, but aren't sure it will wear off.

Sounds promising - just the kind of thing we were hoping to find. Thanks!
