You might want to take a pic from a bit further away for the Pro's to answer..but I'd guess at some sort of holly?
Oh..hmmm yer even further south than me...could be a lot of things down that way that stay green year round. Any blooms at all?
If you don't get a response, you could easily email the master gardener program in your area...
EDIT...I need to read better...now I see no blooms...nevermind on that

Hi Sistum,
I'm not that familiar with what grows in Phoenix, but it looks like one of the green varieties of Euonymus that grow here ad nauseum! Possibly Euonymus japonica.

Euonymus kiautschovicus 'Manhattan' aka Manhattan Euonymus is one of the popular ones here that soon become too large for the space they were planted.

I'd suggest you take a cutting to a local nursery and ask them. Being they are so popular where you are, they should be able to tell you. I'd love to know what you find out.

I actually live in northern NJ and I may have the same type of plant/bush however I am having trouble remembering the name myself. I believe its from England. Actually I planted mine(if its the same as the one pictured) in AUG 08 and it has since died over the winter. It made it until about March and then the leaves started dieing. I was told at the plant exchange that its a year around plant.
Basically I am trying to fill a space(in front of my house and stairs) between 2 large existing hedges about 5-6ft wide by 8ft tall. I was told this plant would grow anywhere from 5-10 ft tall. I used brand new topsoil when I planted it and watered it at least 8x a week after I planted it. I can't understand why it died? I am thinkingthe existing bushes suffocated it? Any ideas?
Bottom line, I like it and will try and plant another but am worried it wont make it due to whatever. However I need some sort of bush to cover the front foundation in the 6ft-8ft range max. Not looking for a tree. Any suggestions? All intelligent comments appreciated.

Hi Godzilla,
Since you can't remember the name of the shrub I can't really say what it's needs were, but your statement:
Unless you live in the desert and your soil is sand, you shouldn't water more then once a week or so. Even planting in August you shouldn't need to water that often, though planting when temps are over 85*F is not recommended. It's also best to plant in the native soil and not bring in new soil just for the planting hole. If you want to add organic material, add compost to the entire planting area, not just the hole.
Maybe this will help.
