Question

We had a walnut tree taken out and have
some mulch from that tree.

I was told that it is NOT GOOD to put this
on schrubs or around garden plants.

comments please
Thanks
Lloyd

The mulch will sour the soil if used too quickly-let it sit out in a pile for 1 year-then use it anywhere you would like.

Black Walnut roots produce a toxin called Juglon which will kill many shrubs and flowers. If you've ever seen a black walnut, everything is bare underneath. Not sure if other walnuts have this same toxin or not, but to be safe...let it rot. Also never use any fresh wood chips as a mulch around plants as the tissue in the mulch chips is still living and actually sucks the nitrogen out of the soil in an attempt to actually use it. Fresh wood chips should be cured for at least a year.
