Violets encroaching on lawn

We recently moved into a new house and the back flowerbeds are filled (almost solely) with violets. They are starting to pop up in the grass along the beds and generally making a mess. How do I get rid of them? I dread pulling them up by hand, but if I rototill them, will I just be plowing them under to have them reappear later? What to do?
