edging around a garden

i want to build a garden/lawn area in my vine covered front yard... i was thinking using some 2x4's and mulch or woodchips...any help on leveling, choice of outdoor wood any anu other tidbits.thanks......these DIY forums rock out

Vines? What kind? Invasive? Check this out with your local county extension agent. You'll have to deal with step one first i.e. the vines. Check out your local library, gardening section, lots of ideas for wood framed ground beds. Use standard 2x4's if you want but they won't last long in contact with the ground. In addition, they can provide a really nice home for slugs and other nasties. Suggest old-fashioned raised bed gardening. Cheap, easy, and really looks like you know what you're doing even if you're new to gardening. Look for Barbara Damrosch and Eliot Coleman books for starters. Also Peter Chan and Mel Bartholomew books for great ideas. Have fun!
