Hi,
I am getting iron stains on my driveway
and the concrete walls of my house.
I know my sprinkler water has a lot of
iron. Is there an inexpensive means
to get rid of iron w/o expensive installations of water softeners??
Let me know of any economic solutions
to this problem. Thanks!

The stains can be caused by iron and also manganese in the water. Chlorine bleach can set them. If you try to remove you might try Iron Out or a non-chlorine bleach.

As for getting the iron out of the water before watering your yard the only method I know of is an "iron exchanger". You might check on it through your local water treatment company that also sells water softeners. A water softener will not help this problem. I have a feeling treating the water will be cost prohibitive.

You might consider adjusting the sprinkler placement so it can not hit the driveway or house.

For any additional information contact your local Cooperative Extension Office by going to http://www.reeusda.gov/1700/statepartners/usa.htm. Click on your state, then county, then find your local office. You might also ask them about the effect this high mineral water has on your plants and soil and if there is anything you need to be doing to adjust for it.
