Irecently planted shrubs around my front porch. What is the best mulch to use? I am concerned about pest control.

Some general guidelines.

1. Check your local garden center to see what is commonly used in your area. They will know the negatives and positives of the mulches they sell.

2. See what the landscapers are using. Usually there is a landscape supplier in each area. They too will have info on negatives.

3. The most commonly used mulches will "generally" be those causing the least problems and will also usually be the least expensive as they will be sold in bulk.

4. Keep all mulches pulled at least 4"-6" back away from the house foundation and any porch supports or structural materials.

5. Check with your local Cooperative Extension Service Office at http://www.reeusda.gov/1700/statepartners/usa.htm. Click on your state, then your county. Find your local office to contact them.

They are familiar with the problem insects in your area and also with the mulches commonly available in your area. These are good people to get to know for your gardening questions and problems.
