pruning fruit trees

I have two Apricot trees and I was wondering if pruning these trees every season is necessary or should I skip one season and only prune every other season?

When we lived in California, I pruned new growth every year in the spring. I never liked apricots, but my wife does. As I remember, the fruit only grows on older wood.
