Granny Smith Root Systems

Hi All,

I am going to be planting Granny Smith Apple Trees and was wondering if anyone could tell me if their root systems tend to grow towards septic systems. Any and all help with this will be much appreciated.

Hi Mike,
Generally it is water loving trees like willows and poplars that people are most concerned about when planting near plumbing or septic systems. Apples do not fall into that category, however I would, if possible plant at least six to eight feet from the system itself. Ideally, you will want to plant shallow rooted herbacioius plants over the septic drain system, but in small yards options are often limited.
Good luck
