Weed Growing In The Middle Of A Boxwood

I got this boxwood shrub that measures around 3' x 3'. There is a large weed that grows right in the center of the boxwood that I cannot pull out by the root (the stem will snap off if I pull to hard). I can't get a small shovel to dig it out either because of all the branches that consolidate beneath the ground.

How do I remove this weed ? Can I spray it with a weed killer and not harm the boxwood ?

Cut the top of the off and apply a killer with a small brush to the cut. Re-apply as it is absorbed and it may kill just the weed roots. It will take time if the root system is large.

Spraying will kill anything it comes in contact, so that may kill the boxwood.
