Bird of Paradise

Hi all,

I'm trying to remove a Huge Bird of Paradise from my front yard. I got most of it out, it was quite a chore. I dug down about 18" or so and about 3' dia.

I got most of the roots out but there are some stubborn ones. They're long and about 1" diameter. My neighbor said they may be "water roots"?

Anybody know if I'm safe leaving some in the ground? I don't want this thing to grow back, it was a monster!

Thanks, Brian

I don't know how much of the roots you have to remove but it's a very hearty plant so if you've got the ground dug I would get what you can, especially anything I'd consider a main root. I would not worry about the finer side roots.

You can treat the remaining roots chemically to ensure the plant doesn't return or you can just watch the area and if any new growth shows up remove it immediately. After a while the roots will die off.

Thanks Guys,
I'll do that. I was digging again and there's no way anybody's gonna remove all those roots. I'd have to dig up half the yard!
